Breeding Bird Atlas Suggestions
Merrill senbt in these comments after completing 2 days surveying a square on the Beaver Dam slope.
Necessary Items
  1. Binoculars
  2. Pencil
  3. Field Guide
  4. Clip Board
  5. Water
  6. GPS Unit (or compass)
  7. Topographic map of area (laminate or encesed in protective cover)
  8. Day Pack
  9. Watch
  10. Thermometer
  11. Jacket
  12. Hat
  13. Code papers (one for habitat and one for behavior)
  14. Full tank of gas
  15. First aid kit
  16. Be able to recognize as many birds as possible by song or calls
  17. Patience (this is not like a Breeding Bird Survey)
Suggested Items
  1. Spotting Scope
  2. Stool
  3. Toilet paper
  4. Rain gear
  5. Sun screen
  6. Chap stick
  7. Snack items
  8. Bug spray
  9. Flagging
  10. Lens cloth
Recommendations
  1. Visit assigned area (if at all possible) before doing survey
  2. Be at assigned square by daybreak
  3. Plan on visiting each survey point for no less than an hour and a half each time and at least two different times during the breeding season
  4. Basic understanding of plant identification
  5. Basic understanding of bird behavior
